Color Harmonies
Combining colors in harmonious color combinations can be very pleasing to the eye. It is a great tool to use when exploring a possible color palette with multiple colors, as it can help you find the optimal shades that work well together.
COMPLEMENTARY COLORS
Colors that are across from one another are called complementary colors. They tend to do well as a contrasting accent color when paired with a neutral, more subtle tone.
TRIADIC COLORS
Triadic color harmonies consist of 3 colors equally spaced from one another on the color wheel. They're high contrast, with one color taking precedence, and most effective when bright.
TETRADIC COLORS
Tetradic color schemes are combinations of two complementary colors which are 60 degrees apart on the color wheel. They're a great way to start color schemes and can be adjusted using various shades, tints, & tones.
ANALOGOUS COLORS
Analogous colors are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. Along with a contrasting complementary color, analogous schemes make for great combinations in web design, not just for layout purposes but also harmonizing with the content itself.
NEUTRAL COLORS
Neutral schemes are like analogous harmonies but they're created by taking 2 similar colors that are closer to each other rather than 30 degrees apart. The color contrast is also less pronounced.
Color Shades, Tints and Tones
Colors can be created by mixing black, white and gray to form tints and shades of a chosen color for use in web design backgrounds or typography. They're often used together with complementary colors.
